Dr. Sue Dyson

Sue Dyson qualified as a veterinarian from the University of Cambridge in 1980. After an internship at the University of Pennsylvania and a year in private equine practice in Pennsylvania, Sue returned to Great Britain to the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket.

BVSc (Massey) PhD (Qld)
Emeritus Professor Pollitt, BVSc graduate from Massey University in 1968, has practiced veterinary surgery in New Zealand, Australia, and Queensland. His 1984 PhD on Equine Plasma Proteins at The University of Queensland marked his shift from practice to academia.

Dr. Virginia Reef, a 1979 graduate of The Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, completed a rotating internship in large animal medicine and surgery, and a residency in large animal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Sue ran a clinical referral service for lameness and poor performance, attracting clients from all over the United Kingdom, Ireland and continental Europe for 37 years. During this period Sue was also awarded a PhD and Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. From2019 she has worked as an independent consultant, combining her horsemanship skills with her previous veterinary experience, with the aim of maximising performance potential.
Sue’s key interests are improving the diagnosis of lameness and poor performance and maximising the opportunity for horses to fulfil their athletic potential at whatever level, taking a holistic approach to the horse, rider and tack combination, and improving approaches to diagnosis and management.
She has been involved not only in providing clinical services, but also clinically relevant research and education. Sue is co-editor, withMike Ross, of Diagnosis and Management of Lameness in the Horse and co-author of Clinical Radiology of the Horse and Equine Scintigraphy. She has published more than 400papers in peer reviewed journals concerning lameness and diagnostic imaging and has lectured worldwide to veterinarians, paraprofessionals, coaches, riders and judges.

A renowned equine foot expert, he tackled laminitis, a critical hoof disease, founding the Australian Equine Laminitis Research Unit in 1996, amassing over $3 million research funding in 8 years. With the aim of preventing laminitis, the unit attracted global focus and produced multiple post-doc fellows and students. Prof. Pollitt authored 73 peer-reviewed articles, chapters in textbooks, and his own successful book, "Colour Atlas of the Horse’s Foot," with a second edition in progress. He has shared expertise internationally, presenting in 19 countries.
Prof. Pollitt has played a pivotal role in equine conferences and earned awards such the Ian Clunies Ross Award in 2006, Equine Veterinarians Australia’s Award for Excellence in the Equine Veterinary Field in 2018, the Australian Veterinary Association’ Gilruth Award for meritorious service in the Veterinary Field in 2019 and was honoured by the Worshipful Company of Farriers.

She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Dr. Reef subsequently became the Director of the Large Animal Cardiology and Ultrasound Service. Shortly thereafter she was instrumental in establishing the Section of Sports Medicine and Imaging at New Bolton Center and has been the Chief of that Section for the past 18 years. Dr. Reef has worked on the faculty at Penn for the past 27 years, advancing through the ranks of assistant, associate, and full professor.
She has trained the majority of academics focusing on equine cardiology and ultrasonography in the United States, as well as many individuals in private practice and overseas.
Based on her many accomplishments, Dr. Reef was granted a prestigious endowed chair at Penn and currently serves as the Mark Whittier and Lila Griswold Allam Professor of Medicine. She is one of the charter diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a large animal associate member of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. In addition to numerous original publications, she is the author and editor of a standard textbook on equine diagnostic imaging, “Equine Diagnostic Ultrasound.”

He then returned to school, attended Haverford College and went on to graduate from the University of Pretoria, Faculty of Veterinary Science in South Africa with a DVM Degree in 1981. After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. O'Grady did an equine internship in Cape Town, South Africa. From here he went on to join Dr. Dan Flynn at the prestigious Georgetown Equine Hospital in Charlottesville, VA where he stayed for 10 years before opening his own practice devoted to competition horses and farriery.
In 2003, Dr. O'Grady opened Northern Virginia Equine in Marshall, Virginia which is a referral practice devoted to foot disease and equine therapeutic farriery. Here he combines his skills as a veterinarian and a farrier to better understand and treat problems of the foot. Dr. O'Grady has published 25 peer-reviewed papers in the veterinary literature, numerous papers in the farrier literature, written ten book chapters and edited two editions of Veterinary Clinics of North America on equine podiatry and therapeutic farriery - all resulting from his extensive work in equine podiatry. In 2003, he was inducted into the International Equine Veterinarians Hall of Fame and in 2009; he received the AAEP President's Award for his work in farrier education.

Dr. Laurie Goodrich is the Director of the Orthopaedic Research Center at Colorado State University’s C. Wayne McIlwraith Translational Medicine Institute and an equine surgeon specializing in orthopedic surgery and lameness with a focus on musculoskeletal injuries and trauma.

She holds the Barbara Cox Anthony University Chair in Orthopaedics and is an American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) Founding Fellow in Minimally Invasive Surgery, Large Animal Orthopedics. She received her DVM from the University of Illinois, completed an internship at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and an equine surgical residency at the Marion du Pont Scott Equine Medical Center in Northern Virginia. During that time, she also completed a Master of Science in Pharmacology. She became faculty at Cornell University as an Equine Surgeon in 1996 and completed a PhD in cartilage repair in 2005 while at Cornell.
She then began at CSU in 2005 as an Assistant Professor of Equine Surgery and is currently a Professor of Surgery and a principal investigator in the Orthopaedic Research Center. She is a clinician scientist whose research focuses on regenerative medicine, gene therapies and biologics to improve joint and bone repair in both animals and people.
She is an active faculty member for AOVET, on the Board of Directors for North American Veterinary Regenerative Medicine Association, the immediate past Chair of the Preclinical Models Section of the Orthopedic Research Society and a past Chair of the Board of Regents for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. In her spare time, she rides horses and is an avid back country skier, mountain biker and whitewater kayaker.

After two years in practice, he returned to academia to undertake further clinical training as a Resident in Equine Studies at the Royal Veterinary College. Following his residency, Roger undertook a three-year research project culminating in the award of a PhD for his studies on the extracellular matrix of equine tendon. He remained at the Royal Veterinary College, first as a Lecturer in Equine Surgery, then as Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery before his appointment as Professor in Equine Orthopaedics in December 2003.
Roger holds the Diploma of Equine Orthopaedics from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Specialist in Equine Surgery. He is a Diplomate of the European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is also a Large Animal Imaging Associate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging.
In 2016, he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for meritorious contribution to knowledge and was elected to president of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in July 2017. She went on to an imaging residency with Dr. Rantanen and CSU, and became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Radiology. She was on faculty at CSU from 2004-2012 and at the University of Florida from 2012-2016. Natasha is a private practice equine radiologist and is a consulting radiologist for numerous different practices and several universities. Natasha’s focus is on clinical equine diagnostic imaging, specifically musculoskeletal imaging with an emphasis on MRI and ultrasound.

He later went on to earn a Diplomate American College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (DACVSMR) as well. Dr. Benoit has served as the Team Veterinarian of the French jumping team from 1992 to 2000, and for many individual team athletes after 2000, and is a former FEI Veterinary Committee member.
Dr. Benoit currently consults in Sports Medicine in California and has a special interest in orthopedics, orthobiologics, and axial skeleton problems on horses.

In 1992 he joined Blackman and O’Gorman (as it was then) in Newbury. In 1995 he undertook a Residency in Equine Surgery at the University of Bristol. He re-joined Donnington Grove Veterinary Surgery in Newbury (as it is now) in 1998 and is now a clinical director and principal equine surgeon. He became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2001 and was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2016. He is scheduled to be BEVA President in 2024.
Bruce is interested in all branches of equine surgery, particularly colic surgery, arthroscopy and fracture repair. He also has a keen interest in imaging, being partly responsible for the MRI and CT service at Donnington Grove. Bruce has published over 40 papers in the peer reviewed literature, and he has lectured around the world, including for the New Zealand, Australian (Bain Fallon), South African, Brazilian (IBT), Israeli, Dutch, Italian (SIVE), Spanish (Concab), French and Hungarian Equine Veterinary Associations, as well as the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons.
Outside of his professional work, Bruce is a (low level) rugby union referee and tries to do the occasional ski trip.

She then completed a Residency in Equine Imaging at Bristol University, obtaining the RCVS Certificate in Equine Orthopaedics during this time. After working back in equine practice, Alison was appointed Clinician Teacher in Equine Orthopaedics at the Equine Hospital in 2009. Alison holds a Diploma in Veterinary Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation.
Alison is also one of the treating veterinary surgeons at the Horse of the Year Show and the British Open Showjumping event. She is a keen rider, eventing her own horse on a regular basis.

Casper undertook a standard ECVS surgical residency from 2008-2011 and became a Diplomate of the ECVS 2012. From 2012-2018 he was the head of surgery of the Evidensia Equine Hospital in Helsingborg, Sweden. In 2018 he returned to the University of Copenhagen where he has been Professor of Equine Orthopaedics since 2019.
Casper has published extensively in the areas of pain evaluation in horses, joint inflammation and orthopaedic diseases as well as in the area of diagnostic imaging in horses.

Lauren has published over 65 peer-reviewed publications, given invited presentations nationally and internationally, and has received both external and internal funding for her research work. In 2019, she was named an NC State University Faculty Scholar for her success in clinical work, research, teaching, mentorship, and community outreach efforts. In 2020, Dr. Schnabel was awarded the Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence.

He is a Nominated Vet for the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Peter has a strong interest in advancing the science and practice of racehorse sports medicine and has lectured and published widely on a range of subjects relating to this, including in 2014 The Racehorse: A Veterinary Manual - the first comprehensive textbook wholly dedicated to veterinary management of the racehorse.
Peter is a previous recipient of BEVA’s Richard Hartley Clinical Award and in 2018 was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) for Meritorious Contributions to Clinical Practice.

Following her residency, Kyla went on to obtain a PhD in gene therapy for equine cartilage repair at Cornell. In February 2016, Kyla became boarded with the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. She joined the large animal surgery faculty at New Bolton Center in 2016 as an equine orthopedic surgeon and was named the Jacques Jenny Endowed Chair of Orthopedic Surgery in 2019.
Her research program focuses on understanding the pathophysiology of equine osteoarthritis and developing gene and cell-based therapies to improve cartilage repair and prevent osteoarthritis.

Upon completion of her residency, she obtained a faculty position in the Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences at the University of California, Davis earning tenure in 2012. During that time, she was actively involved in didactic and clinical teaching, research, and clinical diagnostic imaging. She has authored or co-authored more than 40 scientific articles and multiple book chapters relating to diagnostic imaging in veterinary medicine.
In 2013, Sarah left the University and started Puchalski Equine Inc. She is based in Gibsons, British Columbia and in Wellington, Florida during the Winter Equestrian Festival. Sarah is an avid show jumper competing in the amateur owner divisions.

Sarah hails from Roberts Creek, British Columbia, Canada. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from Simon Fraser University in B.C. and graduated veterinary school in 1999 from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Following veterinary school, she completed a two-year program (internship/residency) in Field Service and Sports Medicine at New Bolton Center, the large animal hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

She then pursued further training in diagnostic imaging at the University of California, Davis completing a four-year residency in 2005. She attained board certification by the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 2004.
Upon completion of her residency, she obtained a faculty position in the Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences at the University of California, Davis earning tenure in 2012. During that time, she was actively involved in didactic and clinical teaching, research, and clinical diagnostic imaging. She has authored or co-authored more than 40 scientific articles and multiple book chapters relating to diagnostic imaging in veterinary medicine.
In 2013, Sarah left the University and started Puchalski Equine Inc. She is based in Gibsons, British Columbia and in Wellington, Florida during the Winter Equestrian Festival. Sarah is an avid show jumper competing in the amateur owner divisions.

Given her experience and strong interest in imaging, she manages both Equine MRI of New Jersey and Advanced Equine Imaging of Wellington. She is based in Wellington for most of the winter season.

Following her residency training, she became a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (DACVSMR) in 2019. She then completed a PhD program at Colorado State University with specific research focus on orthopedic rehabilitation, specifically tendon healing and blood flow restriction training (2022). Dr. Johnson is the recipient of the American Quarter Horse Foundation Young Investigator Award (2018), named the EQUUS Foundation Research Fellow (2019), and was most recently granted the Storm Cat Career Development Award (2020), Iowa State University’s 2020 Young Alumni Award and the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP’s) President Award (2020).
She is honored to serve as the Program Chair of AAEP’s Performance Horse Committee and is a 4-time Kester News Hour moderator. She then practised as an equine ambulatory vet in Cambridgeshire. A PhD in Cellular Biology at the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, lead Rhiannon back to Liverpool University. After which, Rhiannon completed a large animal diagnostic imaging residency at the Royal Veterinary College and is now a lecturer and radiologist working in the Equine Referral Hospital.

She subsequently completed a PhD, investigating exercise-associated joint adaptation and injury in horses.
She has led many studies investigating sport horse training, injury and performance, including for British Dressage, British Eventing, British Equestrian Federation and the FEI. She has also published numerous articles on orthopaedic problems and advanced imaging in horses, contributed to a number of books and edited the standard text on Equine MRI.
Rachel also works for the British Equestrian Federation in various roles, from scientific advice to practical veterinary assessments with various GB squads. Rachel has been providing advice for the BEF World Class Programme since 2009 and has been integrally involved in the maintenance and preparation of numerous team horses for Championships and Olympic Games. She is an FEI treating veterinarian, has worked as a veterinary surgeon with the GB Dressage and Show jumping teams, including as a team vet, and was an official treating veterinarian at the 2012 Olympics.
Rachel has experience training and competing horses to Grand Prix and international level dressage, has competed in a variety of equestrian sports, and is a BHS accredited professional coach.
